MDAS – mass euthanasia of every animal in the facility
Animal activists are outraged and they blame shelter mismanagement and unsanitary conditions for the problem. Because of shelter mismanagement, hundreds of dogs are going to lose their lives,” animal activist Candice Flores said.
Miami-Dade Animal Services has been in the spotlight recently after activists accused shelter workers of mistreating the animals .
Last December, activists targeted the Facebook page of then Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez, demanding that the county build a new animal shelter to remedy what they said are horrific conditions at MDAS.
Pizano, who has served in the position since 2005, has also been under attack. Activists claim that under her watch, hundreds of animals are euthanized daily at the shelter. They want her and shelter management fired.
Pizano refutes many of the claims and says misinformation fuels the anger. She said that if more owners would spay or neuter their pets, it would lead to fewer abandoned animals walking through the door of the shelter, which would mean fewer pets put down.
Meanwhile, the cleanup is expected to take about two weeks. During that time, some of the services usually offered will be suspended.
An infectious disease problem among dogs and puppies prompted Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS) to temporarily suspend some of its services, the shelter announced Thursday afternoon.
Distemper, in particular, has become endemic in the shelter and all dogs and puppies are ill or considered exposed and at risk. After a thorough collaboration with the University of Florida’s Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program veterinary experts in infectious disease and the ASPCA, and in an effort to decrease the pathogen load in the shelter, the following services will be temporarily suspended for no more than two weeks, effective immediately.”
The partial lockdown affects close to 500 puppies and dogs currently in the care of MDAS.
In response to the temporary shut down of services at the shelter, rescue groups are rushing to relocate dogs and puppies with the hopes of saving them.
“We are hearing from a highly-placed internal source that, in fact, they are going to being euthanizing all dogs and puppies after the close of business,”
